For some people, fatigue sets in immediately after going cold-turkey and gets better after a few days. But for some folks, the chronic fatigue and brain fog that comes with sobriety doesn’t go away even after a few months or years. So how do you deal with it? Here are a few tips.

Take Extra Care of Yourself
Get your daily dose of fiber, eat your green leafy vegetables, and drink freshly squeezed citrus juices. If you can, eat less meat and indulge in more fish and seafood. Try not to rely too much on stimulants such as caffeine and cigarettes. Do the things you love but if you don’t know where to start, now is the time to start developing good habits and taking joy in new hobbies.

Exercise & Meditate
Since your body has a hard time producing endorphins, you can kickstart this process by exercising regularly. You can take long walks, quick jogs, or Yoga classes. If you have a smartphone or a tablet, you can download apps that can help you stick to a regular exercise program. And don’t forget to meditate or to take a few deep breaths each morning and before going to bed at night.

Detox
If you think a detox can help your body get rid of toxic build-up, then consult a doctor beforehand. Make sure that your detox process won’t be too hard on your body as your body is already in ‘detox mode’ so to speak. If you like the idea of a detox but don’t think it’s right for you, then simply indulging in more vegetable and fruit smoothies and laying off the sugar is already the best step to the right direction.

Supplement
Supplements such as magnesium for aching muscles, B vitamins for energy, and vitamin C for cold prevention are very helpful for those who are still experiencing chronic fatigue. Some alternative practitioners can also recommend ginseng, gingko biloba, and turmeric for chronic inflammation.

Give Yourself A Break
This is why sober living homes are excellent for people who just got out of rehab. For some, rehab is not enough to bounce back. Chronic fatigue and brain fog are still there and are still not able to function normally around other adults. So give yourself a break and take joy in things that relax and promote happiness. If you love massages, go have regular massages. It can also help aching muscles and joints.

Underlying Illness
Lastly, go through the necessary tests and bloodwork to determine whether or not you have an underlying illness. Sometimes, chronic fatigue can be caused by thyroid or blood sugar issues. If all tests go back normal and you’re still confused, don’t be afraid to ask for support from friends and family members. Be kind to yourself and take it slow if you need to.
