Getting sober is enough of a challenge on its own, but what many recovering addicts don’t realize is that the real hurdles don’t end once you get sober, but continue through the years. While sober living is certainly an attainable goal for many, the best way to hold on to the life you want is to be aware of some of the major threats. While specific challenges will change from person to person, there are always a few that everyone can watch out for. Keep this list in mind next time you see yourself or a loved one slipping.
1. Overconfidence
It is much too easy to get high on your horse after initial success fighting addiction. The self-esteem is a good thing, but too much can lead to unnecessary risks. Never underestimate your addiction.
2. Boredom
Staying sober also means staying active. Make sure to find plenty of ways to fill your free time, whether that is taking up a new hobby, going out with friends, or getting in a little extra exercise.
3. Lack of self-esteem
Some people struggle with keeping up a positive attitude about their consumption habits over the long term. If this is you, just remember all of the challenges you have already overcome.
4. Isolation
The best way to reinforce healthy habits is by spending your time with those that share them. If you feel the urge once again, try calling up one of your close friends who will be willing to talk it through with you.
5. Dishonesty
As we know, the first step is admitting you have a problem. However, the second step is never forgetting that it’s there. Always make sure to stay honest with yourself and with others, so if problems emerge, they can be addressed right away.
6. Stress
Everyone has periods in their life that are a bit rougher on our emotional state. The important thing is to find ways to get yourself through them without regression.
7. Routine
Breaking old habits often means completely restructuring your old life. Switching up eating habits, social groups, or leisure time is a great idea when trying to turn to a new chapter.
